Yatching Lingo Part1

Mast - Vertical pole up which sail is hoisted.

Hull - Floating part of the boat, the body.

Rig - Configuration of mast(s) and sail(s).

Running - Sailing in the same direction that the wind is blowing.

Reaching - Sailing across the wind, at 90° to its direction.

Centerboard/daggerboard - Vertical fin protruding under boat.

Wind direction - Direction from which wind blows.

Luffing - Heading the front of the boat into the wind so the sail flutters and the boat slows.

Tacks - Zigzag courses perpendicular to each other by which a boat may progress toward the wind.

Beating/sailing close-hauled - Sailing at 45° to the direction from which the wind is coming.
